It can be used as a 'tool' to test an argument and help create the atmosphere of a paper. When a student is struggling with their argument, they should try writing an argumentative essay instead of writing one-sided essays. The goal is to have an opportunity to expand upon an argument in a concise manner, but without forcing an argument on your reader.
The purpose of writing an argumentative essay is to give your reader a good idea of what you are arguing. One does not argue in a way that others do not find acceptable. Often this is accomplished by having the argument sound reasonable and not overbearing to the listener. Having a basic idea of the topic will help you be more successful. What topics are there in your world that are important enough to write about? How important is your argument to you? Once you know what the topic is, it becomes easier to choose the best topic to write about. Once you have decided on a particular topic, then you must decide on the format. The format of the essay depends on who is going to read it. If you are going to give your audience the idea of your argument, you will need to include a conclusion. If you are writing it for yourself, you do not need to include any conclusion, but if you are giving the paper to a professor or teacher, they will want to see a conclusion. Without a conclusion, you will lose points for being insincere. Once you have decided on a particular subject, then you must decide how to organize the argument. In your essay, you must also decide how to write within the restrictions of the topic. Your topic will have to do with something in the world, so you may have to leave out certain information. Or you can include some information that is not relevant to the topic, but you must not stray outside the parameters of the topic. You can add other topics, but make sure that they fit into the topic. Most people want to know what they are getting themselves into before they write. Most essays are written to get you the idea, so you may want to use a sentence like, 'This topic is interesting to me because of...'. Another method of doing this is to use the writer's block defense. You can talk about the topic and provide supporting facts to the point that will show why you believe the topic is interesting. Keep in mind that the more supporting facts you provide, the more helpful they will be to readers, so keep it to the point of the argument. Finally, you should think about how you will structure your own topic. If you are giving it to a professor, you can always begin with a brief outline of your topic. It is likely that you will need to use a multiple choice type of essay format to help you with this step. Once you have written the first section, you may have to revise it. In this case, you will need to use a sentence construction to move from one section to the next.
